Banana Experience in Tenerife

La Estrella del Sur, Avda/ La Calma s/n, (junto a la Ctra. TF-66 Guaza)

Overview

In this banana experience in Tenerife, you will discover the essence of an iconic product from the Canary Islands: the banana. Through this experience you will see the cultivation of platano, its production and commercialization. You will also learn about the different agricultural tasks that are carried out and the tools used.

You will also learn the history of the banana and the family legacy for several generations.

The visit is carried out in three possible formats:

  • Guided individual visit.
  • Self-guided individual visit.
  • Guided group tour (booking in advance).

Finally, you will take a break in EL CUARTITO to taste the plantains and accompanying products and see how gofio is made in the traditional way.

On individual self-guided tours, visitors receive a welcome and initial explanation and can arrive anytime between 10:00 and 12:00. Then you can continue at your own pace, and you will find some numbered posters where you can read what is shown in the folder according to the language: Spanish, English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Dutch and Polish with duration. 60 minutes are recommended.

In guided tours: every Friday at 10:00 a.m. you will have a guided tour of 100 to 120 minutes. The idea is to gather all the people (couples, families or small groups) who are interested in traveling with a guide on a specific day. The tour is longer and goes through different corners of the farm as we get a fuller explanation of the family heritage and unique aspects of banana cultivation (starting in July).

Since 2012, we have carried out these thematic visits to learn about banana cultivation in the region of Arona, Las Galletas, including visits from tourists, neighbors and, especially, schoolchildren and young students from different countries.

Two varieties of Canarian bananas are grown on this farm, a large dwarf banana and a small dwarf shrub of the dwarf Cavendish variety. Each bunch reaches an average of 45-50 kg, and the specimens found exceed 70 kg. The plantation area is about 8 hectares. Plant 98% bananas and 2% fruit trees such as: mangoes, papayas and avocados.

Our farm is accessible for people with reduced mobility and the distance on foot is not very long (up to 300 meters). There are different rest seats during the tour.

We offer rustic-style unisex toilet service next to the tasting area for people with reduced mobility. The tasting area is located outside, sheltered by banana leaves in the shade of a 40-year-old mango tree, next to the old tool room of the EL CUARTITO farm, used as a rest space, workshops, tastings, exhibitions and shop. The installation represents a wooden house inside a banana farm, with wooden and cement seats.
