8 best places to visit in Tenerife: a local guide to the island

Tenerife is far more than its southern beaches. Its volcanic landscapes, historic towns, forests and traditional villages reveal very different sides of the island. These eight places offer a rewarding introduction if you give each area the time it deserves.

1. Teide National Park. Volcanic rock formations, lava fields and high-altitude viewpoints make this landscape unforgettable. Check road conditions, weather and any trail access rules before travelling.

2. San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Wander the UNESCO-listed historic centre to discover colourful traditional buildings, peaceful courtyards and streets shaped by the island's past.

3. Anaga Rural Park. Misty forests, mountain ridges and small villages make north-eastern Tenerife feel remarkably different from the coast. Stick to authorised paths and dress for changing weather.

4. Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The island capital mixes markets, museums, contemporary architecture and lively public spaces, offering a glimpse of modern local life.

5. Garachico. This historic north-coast town retains traces of its seafaring past alongside volcanic coastal scenery and well-known natural pools.

6. Icod de los Vinos. Explore the old town and the setting of the famous Drago Milenario, a landmark associated with the island's botanical heritage.

7. La Orotava. Its traditional wooden balconies, historic houses, gardens and elegant streets make it a wonderful stop in the northern valley.

8. Teno Rural Park. Deep ravines, cliffs and villages such as Masca reveal some of Tenerife's oldest volcanic landscapes. Check road and access restrictions in advance.

These destinations cannot all be enjoyed properly in a single day. Split your visits across several days, or ask a licensed local guide to build a realistic private itinerary.
