Before visiting Tenerife: essential tips for a better holiday

Our original GetHoliday guide gathered fifty facts about Tenerife. This revised edition focuses on the points travellers can actually use, without repeating outdated statistics or travel rules.

1. Tenerife is the largest Canary Island by area. Its north, south, historic towns and volcanic mountains offer very different experiences.

2. Local weather changes with altitude and trade winds. You may enjoy warm sunshine by the sea while Mount Teide is cold and windy.

3. There are two airports, Tenerife South (TFS) and Tenerife North (TFN). Check the airport code carefully before arranging a transfer.

4. Public buses are called guaguas. They connect many towns, but remote viewpoints and trailheads may need more careful planning.

5. If you rent a car, remember that mountain roads can be winding and slower than the distance on a map suggests.

6. Teide National Park has regulated areas and some trails may require permits. Check the official access, road and weather information.

7. Historic towns such as La Laguna, La Orotava and Garachico are best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time.

8. Protected places including Anaga and Teno contain fragile habitats. Stay on permitted trails and respect local residents and nature.

9. Atlantic beaches can experience strong waves and currents. Follow safety flags, lifeguards' instructions and local alerts.

10. For ferry journeys to La Gomera or neighbouring islands, bring valid identification and check the operator's boarding requirements.

11. Spanish is widely spoken, and local words such as guagua and papas arrugadas offer a glimpse of Canary Islands culture.

12. Don't try to see every corner of Tenerife in one day. A few well-planned stops or a tailored tour with a licensed guide will make the journey more rewarding.
