Whales and dolphins in Tenerife: a guide to responsible watching

The waters off south-west Tenerife and towards La Gomera are an important habitat for several cetacean species. Short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are among the animals visitors may encounter on a boat trip.

Cetaceans include toothed species, such as dolphins and pilot whales, and baleen whales, which filter food from seawater. Understanding these differences makes observing them more meaningful.

Choose an authorised operator that follows local rules on approach distances, vessel speed and animal welfare. Chasing wildlife, getting too close or creating unnecessary noise can disturb natural behaviour.

Sightings are never guaranteed because these are wild animals. Bring sun protection, water and a light layer for the sea breeze, and appreciate the Atlantic scenery alongside any encounters.
